Projects

The renowned Rock Art Research Institute (RARI) of the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, houses the largest collection of rock art images.

Bushmen Rock Art

Founded and directed for 21 years by Professor David Lewis-Williams, one of the world's leading rock art scientists, RARI is internationally respected for its research and publication record. Now directed by Professor Benjamin Smith, it has become perhaps the largest rock art institution in the world, offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses. In addition, it provides a unique "911" service with a team on call 24 hours a day, ready to rush to rock art wherever it is threatened in southern Africa.

In 2001, Ringing Rocks Foundation inaugurated a major project to preserve the many images collected of southern African rock art. Deteriorating images have been digitally scanned and will be published on CDs and made available to museums and interested institutions worldwide.

To view some of these culturally significant works, please visit the SARADA web site created by RARI:
