are mixed to be drunk. The following is the poison neutralizer,
consisting of pepe root and 3 grains of fennel, which are
all mixed to be drunk. If the limbs of the patient are stiff,
and the eyes are reddish, it is said that he is suffering from
tiwang penyu. The ingredients of the medicine are tuba
jenu, nutmeg, incense, sarilungid, sinrong, which are
mixed to be drunk. If the mouth of the patient stays opened or
tightly closed, with the body hair standing on end, and the hair
is stiff, he is suffering from tiwang sona and the medicine
is the mixture of mandalika, pangi leaves, onion,
garlic, jangu, red rice used as powder. If the eyes of
the patient are dry and blinking, this means that he is suffering
from tiwang kapi. The medicine consists of lime juice,
pepper, kamferia galanga, onion, garlic, jangu, red rice,
which are all mixed as powder. If the patient has red spots on
her/his skin, she/he is attacked by tiwang jaran. The ingredients
of the medicine are dalungdung root, the outer part of
the bark and root of kapal tree, onion, garlic, jangu,

are all mixed as powder. There are other symptoms of tiwang
diseases in babies. If the limbs of a baby are stiff and cramp,
she/he is suffering from a disease called tiwang gurita,
for which the medicine consists of yellow meduri, onion,
garlic, jangu, 12 grains of rice, which are all mixed as
powder. If the body of the patient is heavy to bear, he is suffering
from tiwang kebo. The ingredients of its medicine are cactus
root, beluntas root, onion, garlic, jangu, 11 grains of
rice. If a baby cries in pain night and day, the body is stiff,
she/he is attacked by tiwang kupu-kupu. The medicine is
nagasari flower smeared between the eyebrows. The medicine
for a baby who cries at night consists of Blumea balsamifera leaves,
sigugu, Curcuma xanthorriza, onion, garlic, jangu, which
are all mixed and crushed to be applied as powder. The medicine
for a baby who keeps crying at night includes kitchen ashes picked
up three times using the tip of fingers and then this is smeared
on the forehead of the baby. The neutralizer for a baby who keeps
crying during the night is a piece of palm leaf

the magic formula "Om sibyang babyang, Om syah asyah"
written on it and the inscribed palm leaf is then kept under the
bed of the baby. A baby who keeps crying at night is said to have
been attacked by bajang tumemeretan and the neutralizer
for this is the sap of jackfruit, smeared between the eyebrows
of the baby. The neutralizer for a baby who likes crying at night
is the bathing of the baby using the water dripped down from the
kitchen roof. The water is caught with a container after being
thrown up over the kitchen roof. While bathing the baby, welfare
must be requested from Lord Brahma. The neutralizer for
a baby in pain is a piece of palm leaf with the magic formula"brahoh
sasah, bwasah litsyaha" and the picture of a giant is
inscribed on it. The palm leaf is kept in the right hand of the
baby. If sometimes a baby looks pale, the face looks reddish,
this means that she/he is suffering from katepuk tegah dewa
disease
[3b] The
ingredients of the medicine include the kernel of galangale, the
kernel of turmeric, the kernel of Zingiber aromaticum, 12 grains
of red rice which are mixed to be drunk. A baby, suffering from
twisting stomachache, is considered to have been attacked by a
disease called tiwang gurita. The healing is by drinking
concoction made of the root of Erythrina variegata growing in
the forest, the root of Moringa citrifolia, onion, garlic and
jangu. There is another disease called tiwang tikus
which occurs in the navel. The medicine consists of the leaf of
samanjahi, 12 grains of pepper, onion, and jangu
which are all mixed and then smeared on the aching parts of the
body. If a patient suffers from tiwang, and feels that
something sticking in the navel, the ingredients of the medicine
are the root of round eggplant, the root of tall grasslike weed,
onion, jangu, red saliva (after chewing betel), mixed together
and smeared on the aching parts of the body. If a baby vomits,
this means that he is suffering from tiwang belabur and
the ingredients of the medicine include 7 leaves of old betel
leaves, 7 falling orange leaves, onion, garlic, jangu, which are
boiled to be drunk. These
[4a] are
the symptoms of a baby suffering from fever or stifling heat.
Be careful to check the breath and the eyes. If there is blood
in the white part of the eye, while the black part is yellowish,
the patient is having fever. If the white part of the eye and
the pupil looks a bit yellowish, the lips are dry, those are the
symptoms of fever. If the body hair of the patient stands on end,
the hair is stiff, check both of her/his hands. If the flow of
the breath is hard and swishing, the patient is having fever.
If there is a powerful beat on the chest when it is pressed, while
the breath from the nose is hot, and the lips are dry and the
fingers and toes are cold, this means that the patient is suffering
from sibris. If the white part of the eye is bluish, and the colour
of the pupils of the eyes is also blue,
[4b] the
flow of the breath is gathered in the mouth, the patient is feeling
cold. If there is no vibration when the chest of the patient is
pressed, the breath from the the nose is cold, this means that
the patient is feeling cold. If the toes are cold and the breath
from the nose is also cold, this means that the patient is cold.
If both the white and black parts of the eyes look yellowish,
the limbs are cold, every time around sunset, and the breath coming
out from the mouth is hot, the patient is suffering from stifling
heat. If about evening the body of the patient is stiflingly hot,
and the breath coming out from the nose is faster and hot, the
patient is suffering from fever. If the breath is slowing down,
every time around sunset the fingers and toes are cold, and the
breath from the mouth is hot, the patient is suffering from sebaha
gontang. If the lips of the patient are cracked, the breath from
the nose is hot
[5a] the
flow of the energy is hot, and the limbs are cold, those are the
symptoms that the patient is suffering from sebaha jampi.
If the lips of the patient are cracked, the breath is hard and
the air from the nose is cold, the toes are cold, and all the
body is stiflingly hot, the patient is suffering from sebaha
jampi. If the lips are cracked and the patient feels sick,
the breath from the nose is hot, stiflingly hot around twilight,
the limbs are cold, this means that the patient is suffering from
sebaha jampi. If the toes are hot and the breath from the
nose is cold, this means that the patient is suffering from asrep
kapendem. If the breath from the nose and the toes are hot, the
nails are reddish, the patient is suffering from chronic fever.
If the fingers and toes are cold, the lips are aternately opened
and shut, the patient is suffering from chronic srep. The
medicine for a baby who does not

to eat, who is considered to suffer from sebaha nyuh, is
the mixture of such ingredients as black Coleus atropurpureus,
fragrant sulasih, 3 pieces of tatahiwak leaves,
lime, water produced by soaking sandalwood, fennel, crushed, boiled
and used as the bathing water. The medicine for a baby suffering
from malaria is Zingiber aromaticum and lenga wijen, applied
as rubbing medicine. The ingredients for the medicine which are
usually put on the crown of the baby's head include gamongan
kedis (a kind of zingiber sp.), musi, coconut oil, all mixed
and burried in the hot ashes and then put on the baby's crown.
The ingredients for the medicine put on the navel include the
fiber of Erythrina variegata and the bottom part of garlic. The
ingredients for malaria are nutmeg, dewandaru, ler wandawa,
applied as powder. The ingredients of medicine for a baby suffering
from fever are red rice, betel fruit, onion, fennel, crushed to
be made as powder. The concoction for a baby suffering from fever
consists of waribang leaf, gandarusa kling leaves,
arrack, used for rubbing the body of the patient.
[6a] The
healing ingredients for a baby suffering from fever are gandarusa
kling leaves, Curcuma xanthorriza, onion, garlic, all mixed
and used for sprinkling the patient. The medicinal ingredients
for a feverish baby include Blumea balsamifera leaves, Zingiber
purpureum, roasted coconut, Curcuma xanthorriza, crushed to be
used as rubbing medicine, and the ingredients to be used for sprinkling
the body are betel leaves and Blumea balsamifera leaves which
are crushed and then mixed with salt and gamongan. The
ingredients for heavy fever and symptoms of restlessness are coconut,
fennel, lime juice, all mixed for bathing water. The ingredients
for fever, stifling heat and restlessness are Blumea balsamifera
root, kesimbukan root, pancar sona root, roasted
coconut, onion burried in hot ashes, water produced by soaking
gajih sticky rice , salt, iodine, mixed to be drunk. The
ingredients for children suffering from stifling heatt and restlessness
are paspasan, padang lepas, citrus, to be used as powder.
The ingredients of medicine for babbies (children) suffering from
stifling heat and restlessness are the root of
[6b] katepeng,
paspasan flower, sandalwood, banyu tuli, all mixed
in the bathing water. The medicine for a baby/children suffering
from stifling heat is the outer part of the bark of Alstonia scholaris
tree, lime juice, onion, fennel, all mixed to be drunk. The ingredients
of the medicine for a baby/children suffering from stifling heat
and restlessness are tulak wood, sangka wood, dahusa
kling, sandalwood, citrus juice, to be used as powder. The
drinking medicine is made of the mixture of padang lepas,
tamarind, andonion burried in hot ashes. The medicine used for
sprinkling a baby suffering from sibris is the mixture of kameniran
leaves, paspasan and fennel. The ingredients of drinking
medicine for babbies/children suffering from sibris are the root
of silagui, fennel and coconut milk. The ingredients for
a baby suffering from sibris are the shoot of pancar sona
leaves, raw onion and water produced by soaking rice.

ingredients of medicine for a baby suffering from sibris are wane
flower, Averrhoa belimbi, raw onion, water produced by soaking
gajih sticky rice, to be dropped into the nose of the patient
and for drinking medicine. The medicine for tiksna kapendem
consists of squash, Curcuma xanthorriza, onion burried in hot
ashes, which are used as nose drop and drinking medicine. The
ingredients of medicine for a baby suffering from fever are cotton
bud, roasted coconut shoot, onion burried in hot ashes, and water
produced by soking gajih sticky rice, to be used
as nose drop and drinking medicine. There is another mixture consisting
of roasted coconut shoot, cotton bud, water produced by soaking
rattan, damuh klengis, roasted pijer, used as a
dropping and drinking medicine. The ingredients of medicine for
a baby suffering from fever are the outer part of the bark of
ulu tree, water produced by soaking gajih
sticky rice, water produced by soaking sandalwood mixed with lime,
sarilungid, and onion burried in hot ashes, to be used
as drinking medicine. The drinking medicine for a baby suffering
from sebaha jampi is the root of medong, Blumea
balsamifera leaf, kesimbukan, dingin-dingin, roasted coconut,
boiled and steamed
[7b] mixed
with sarilungid, and onion burried in hot ashes. The ingredients
for a baby suffering from sebaha jampi are the leaves and
root of Averrhoa belimbi, orob leaves, roasted outer part
of the bark of the tree, and the root burried in hot ashes, the
kernel of turmeric lump burried in hot ashes, roasted tamarind,
andonion burried in hot ashes. The ingredients for a baby suffering
from fever and gastroentritis are the leaves of kameniran,
Oxalis corniculata gunung leaves, the outer part of the
bark of Alstonia scholaris tree, and the water produced by soaking
gajih sticky rice, all pounded, and filtered to be drunk.
The medicine for a baby suffering from gastroentritis consists
of canging leaves, padang lepas (Cynodon dactylon Pest),
fennel, mixed to be used as sprinkling medicine. The sprinkling
medicine for a baby suffering from gastroentritis and cramp consists
of mer leaves, teki leaves, onion, and fennel. For
a baby suffering from gastroentritis.

cramp the medicine consists of Zingiber purpureum, Cryptocarya
laevigata, mixed for sprinkling medicine. The drinking medicine
for a baby suffering from gastroentritis and unable to defecate
and urinate is the mixture of waribang (hibiscus rosa-sinemsis)
leaves, citrus juice, kernel of turmeric, coconut milk. The sprinkling
medicine for a baby suffering from restless gastroentritis is
the mixture of the leaves of Averrhoa belimbi, Zingiber purpureum,
onion and fennel. Another sprinkling medicine consists of tinga-tinga
leaves, onion and fennel. The drinking medicine for a baby suffering
from gastroentritis is mustard greens, turmeric, warangan
and warm water. The drinking medicine for a baby suffering from
jampi bengka consists of Blumea balsamifera root, silagui root,
Erythrina variegata root, pancar sona, soft coconut, well
boiled and steamed, and then mixed with sarilungid and
the bones of a cow. The drinking medicine for a baby suffering
from jampi bengka is made from pomegranate, the leaves
of black kesimbukan, crushed and then mixed with arrack.
The drinking medicine for a baby suffering from jampi is the mixture
of white jaruti root

xanthorriza, black Coleus amboinicus, sugar, roasted coconut milk,
salt, and iodine. The medicine for a baby suffering from jampi
sibris consists of the leaves and root of Averrhoa belimbi, roasted
coconut, fennel, mixed with sarilungid, fennel, the kernel of
onion burried in hot ashes, boiled to be drunk. The medicine for
a baby suffering from jampi, pain in the waist, lips and
tongue and hard to breathe is made of Erythrina variegata root,
kendal batuka root, the bark of waribang (hibiscus rosa-sinemsis)
tree, and fragrant sulasih. Mixed with gambir anom,
fennel, sarilungid, onion roasted burried in hot ashes,
boiled and steamed, and filtered to drink. The ingredients of
the medicine for a baby suffering from jampi and gastroentritis
which is called the disease of jampi agung, cramp in the
midriff, smarting, continued dry coughing are the root of kutat
kedis, the juice of young soft coconut, the outer part of
the bark of ulu tree, mixed with gambir anom
[9a] crushed
up for drinking medicine. The medicinal ingredients for sprinkling
the body are the sliced kutat kedis washed with pure water,
wrapped with banana leaf and roasted, mixed with coriander seeds,
used for sprinkling the stomach of the patient. The mixture of
medicine used for sprinkling the midriff consists of the thick
bark of Alstonia scholaris tree, roasted coconut, coriander seeds.
The medicine for a baby suffering from jampi kalingsih
is by eating Averrhoa belimbi and fennel. The leaves of Averrhoa
belimbi mixed with fennel is applied as powder on the waist. The
drinking medicine for a baby suffering from jampi kalingsih
is the leaves and the root of pasatan lingir mixed with
fennel, onion burried in hot ashes, gulasari, thick coconut
milk. The medicine for a baby suffering from cramp is fragrant
sulasih, Zingiber purpureum, black Coleus amboinicus, to
be applied as powder. The medicine for a baby suffering from cramp
is turmeric lump, Zingiber aromaticum burried in hot ashes, coriander
seed,

seed, salt, and iodine. The drinking medicine for a baby suffering
from sickness and frothing is made from the outer part of the
bark of bunut bulu tree, onion, and fennel. The ingredients
for the sprinkling medicine are Zingiber purpureum, kamferia galanga,
the root of Moringa citrifolia, which are all roasted. The medicine
for a baby suffering from jampi, with its accompanying
feeling of sickness, is galangale, limestone. Salt, and thick
coconut milk, all left to be cold and drunk.
[10a] The
drinking medicine for a baby suffering from sickness and stiflingheat
in the midriff consists of such ingredients as Curcuma xanthorriza
mixed with honey and sarilungid. The ingredients for the
drinking medicine for a baby suffering from sickness and stifling
heat in the midriff are 3 slices of galangale, garlic, and a little
of limestone. For a baby suffering from fever and pain in the
midriff, the ingredients of the medicine are kasine leaves,
fennel, banyu tuli, all mixed to be drunk. The medicine
for a baby suffering from stomachache, colic, causing inability
to move comprises such ingredients as the outer part of the bark
of nyali tree, beluntas leaves, Cryptocarya laevigata,
Curcuma xanthorriza, roasted clay mixed with the mixture of the
medicine, and then the patient has to drink it. The ingredients
for the drinking medicine for a baby suffering from stomachache
are the water produced by soaking of sandalwood, candlenut, onion
burried in hot ashes, all mixed for drink. The drinking medicine
for a baby suffering from stomachache has such ingredients as
nutmeg, water produced by soaking sandalwood, gajih sticky
rice, all mixed to be drunk. For the mixture applied on the navel
of the patient, the ingredients include Erythrina variegata fiber
and the bottom part of garlic. The ingredients for a baby suffering
from stomachache are

Zingiber purpureum, bitter ginger, 3 grains of pepper, onion,
garlic, jangu, arrack, all mixed to be rubbed on the body
of the patient. The ingredients for the medicine of sula gurita
disease are salt, the bottom part of lemon, onion, garlic, jangu,
arrack, all mixed to be used for rubbing the body of the patient.
The medicine for a baby who cannot defecate includes 7 shoots
of waru leaves, citrus, onion roasted with ember, which
are crushed and filtered to be drunk. The medicine for a baby
who cannot defecate includes the ingredients of 12 betel leaves,
salt picked up three times using the tips of the fingers, which
are crushed and to be applied on the bladder The medicine for
a baby who cannot defecate and urinate consists of the outer part
of the bark and the root of candlenut, to be applied on the bladder
up to the genital level. The medicine for a baby having diarrhea
is ambua, onion burried in hot ashes, all mixed to be drunk.
The powder is made from kalayan leaves and gamongan.
The medicine for a baby
[11a] suffering
from diarrhea is water produced by soaking black sticky rice and
fennel, mixed to be drunk. The ingredients for the powder are
the shoot of gunggung leaves, the shoot of basa-basa
leaves, the shoot of sentul leave, the shoot of juwet
(eugenia cumini druse) leaves, gamongan, coriander
seed, turmeric, all crushed as powder for rubbing on the body
of the patient. The medicine for a baby suffering from light diarrhea,
is the sanggalangit leaves, banyu tuli, all mixed
to be drunk. The medicine for a baby having heavy diarrhea is
medong leaves crushed with stone, during which no stepping
over it is allowed and then it is mixed with 3 slices of bujangga
dewa, sidawayah, all crushed to be drunk. The igredients for
the medicine of a baby suffering from diarrhea is the shoot of
kesimbuhan leaves, 3 pieces of sulasih merik (a kind
of ocimum bacilium), 3 slices of Zingiber purpureum, black
Coleus amboinicus, all crushed and then filtered for drink. The
ingredients for the medicine for a baby suffering from diarrhea
with froth are bengkel leaves, thick coconut milk, boiled
and then mixed with sarikuning to be drunk.
[11b] The
drinking medicine for a baby suffering from stomachache, with
pain in the midriff called garabab, consists of the root
of Erythrina variegata, dalungdung root, the root of cajuputi,
all boiled and when done, it is mixed with onion burried in hot
ashes, fennel and banyu ambwa. The ingredients of the medicine
for a baby suffering from chronic diarrhea are the outer part
of the bark of pomegranates, sliced and fried without oil, mixed
and then crushed to be rubbed on the stomach and the waist of
the patient. The ingredients for diarrhea containing blood are
the flowers of green coconut grown to the north-east direction,
kendal leaves, the root of green pakis (a kind of cyathea
Sp.), sugar, thick coconut milk, mixed to be drunk. The ingredients
of the medicine for a baby suffering from diarrhea with blood
are the fiber of banyan, the root of grass, thick coconut milk,
all mixed to be drunk. The medicinal ingredients for the disease
of defecating with blood are the jumbo areca nut, leaves
of parasites plant, both being sliced

be eatan. The ingredients of the medicine for a baby suffering
from diarrhea with blood are the outer part of the bark of red
turi (sesbania grandiflora Pers.), kusambi leaves, ampo
powder, sugar, banyu tuli, all mixed to be drunk. The medicinal

tree, black sugar cane, sugar, thick coconut milk, all mixed to
drink. The ingredients of the medicine for a baby suffering from

be drunk. The ingredients for a baby suffering from lelengedan
are isep nanah, isep getih, onion, fennel, mixed to be
applied as rubbing medicine. The ingredients for a baby suffering
from pejen (a kind of dysentery) are the spiraling upward
of banyan tree, the root of silagui, onion burried in hot ashes,
all mixed to be drunk. The ingredient of the medicine for a baby
suffering from pejen are the root of white hibiscus, demung
root, onion burried in hot ashes, water produced by soaking rice,
mixed to be drunk. The ingredients of medicine for a baby suffering
from pejen are sanggalangit leaves, onion, fennel,
to be rubbed on the body of the patient.
[12b] There
is another set of ingredients which includes katepeng leaves,
onion, and fennel. There are other people who use the mixture
of mer leaves, onion, fennel to be rubbed on the body of
the patient. The ingredients of the medicine for a baby suffering
from pejen are the bark of red turi tree, the skin
of kuang, Curcuma xanthorriza, mixed with sugar, and iodine
salt to be drunk. The ingredients of the medicine for a baby suffering
from pejen mixed with suppuration and blood are young Momordica
charantia and its root, crushed and filtered using cotton, mixed
with the kernel of green coconut, and iodine salt, all mixed to
drink. The ingredients for stopping the diseases of pejen
and lelengedan are black sticky rice, majakane,
majakling, palasari, intisari podi, crushed and then burried
in hot ashes, and after getting done, it is to be swallowed. The
ingredients of the medicine for a baby suffering from pejen
and hemorrhoids are the old Datura metel root, burried in hot
ashes until done, mixed with black Coleus amboinicus, to be rubbed
on the waist and the belly below the navel of the patient. The
ingredients of the medicine for a baby suffering from nosebleeding
are the bud of banyan, and the root of white fowered hibiscus.

for a baby suffering from nosebleeding are hanging Blumea balsamifera,
Zingiber aromaticum, jalawe, sarilungid, crushed and burried
in hot ashes, to be sticked to the patient's nose. The ingredients
of the powder are wedi leaves, wangkosari, Zingiber
aromaticum, the kernel of dres. The ingredients of the
medicine for a baby suffering from continued nosebleeding are
the leaves of wira gunung. If the white part of the eye
is bluish, the eyelashes are tousled, the neckpole is like being
snared, the patient is considered to have been attacked by the
disease of siksik. If a baby who just falls asleep and
then suddenly wakes up and cries not knowing what he wants, it
indicates that the baby suffers from stifling heat everyday but
eats a lot, the baby is said to have suffered from the disease
of siksik. A baby who is very thin, eats a lot, with the
neckpole like being snared, he is then considered to have suffered
from the disease of siksik. If there is a baby who eats
a lot,

heavily, likes crying at night, with the white part of the eyes
bluish, the eyelashes are tousled, he is said to have been attacked
by the disease of siksik lengis. The ingredients of the
medicine for siksik are the gall of red-feathered chicken roasted
on the stove, sticked with 3 palm-leaf ribs, for which the fire
must be made of charcoal, and after it is done, it is eaten. The
magic formula is "Om Sanghyang Raditya Ulan Taranggana,
kasilir dening angin, syar apadang" (My Deity of the

of siksil are the bark of cajuputi tree, sugar, iodine salt, all
mixed to be drunk. The magic formula is "Om dewa amaksakaken,

put on the crown of a baby are sliced bungkak and fennel.

ring kiwa tengenku, den tatas rahina, Om cetning (say it three
times), jeng" (My God, as Deity of the Sun and the
Moon residing on my left and right sides, you shine the day).
The ingredients of the medicine for the disesase of siksik
are black Coleus atropurpureus to be used as eye drop to the patient's
eyes with the magic formula going on: "Om cacing kapuluku,
panem atuwa, matuwa padi (say it three times), pati-pati-pati,
kedep sidi mantranku" (It is hoped that the oldest

drunk. The ingredients of the medicine for a baby suffering from
gastroentritis and who does not want to eat are a handful of Oxalis
corniculata gunung leaves, 3 pieces of pepe leaf,
turmeric warangan, bamboo shoot, onion burried in hot ashes,
all mixed to be drunk. The ingredients of the medicine for the
disease of a baby who vomits are lump of turmeric, kamferia galanga,
fennel, majakling, salt, coriander seeds,to be crushed
and then burried in hot ashes,all mixed to be drunk. The medicine
for a thin baby consists of raw crab, daringo wood, smashed
and then put on the stomach of the patient. The medicine for a
coughing baby includes the ingredients of the leaves of Averrhoa
belimbi, onion, garlic, jangu, to be sprinkled on the chest
of the patient. The ingredients of the medicine for a baby suffering
from siksik are jali root, silagui root,
roasted house lizard, onion burried in hot ashes,
[16a] iodine
salt, all mixed to be drunk. The ingredients of medicine for a
baby suffering from kurawitan are the shoot of Oxalis corniculata
leaves, sour arrack, mixed to be drunk. The ingredients of medicine
for a swollen baby are crushed kamakara, to be put in the
lower part of the navel. The ingredients of the medicine for a
baby suffering from stifling heat are sigugu leaves, pupulutan
leaves, to be crushed, and put on the aching parts of the patient's
body. The ingredients of medicine for a baby who keeps crying
at night are Blumea balsamifera leaves, sigugu leaves, Curcuma
xanthorriza, onion, garlic, jangu, crushed to be put on the aching
parts of the sick baby. The ingredients of medicine for a baby
who keeps crying at night are kitchen ashes picked up by the tips
of the fingers for seven times and then smeared on the forehead
of the patient. The ingredients of medicine for a baby suffering
from inja are teleng leaves, kalundahan leaves,
arrack, mixed and used as powder. The ingredients of medicine
for a baby suffering from inja are kem leaves, candlenut,
fennel, all mixed to be used as powder. The following is the way
how to wean a child. The weaning of a baby boy is better to be
done when he is 630 days old, and for a baby girl when she is

days old. However it is also better to ask for welfare from Lord
Brahma with the offering of one canang, one water
dipper of water, one chicken egg put under the bed which the baby
is then asked to pick to be sprayed on him from above using the
water from the water dipper. The neutralizing material for the

If the baby is sleeping, recite the charm once. This is the charm
for driving the diseases away of which ingredients include waribang,
the kernel of iron, and water in the container made from small
black coconut shell, to be sprayed to the patient, for which the
charm is "Om sanghyang ubar-abir, I panundung gering kapapas,
yan gering kaumak-amik, yanana gering kadesti, sanghyang ubar-abir
angundurang gering, balik mulih ka paumahanmune, kon mangleyak
ibanmune, kon maneluh ibanmune, petoken pianakmune, kakretekan
cucunmune, amah sarosob (My Deity of Ubar-Abir, the deity who
chases all kinds of disease, it is hoped that the diseases get
back to the creator).
[17b] ebat
awak sariwanmune, sanghyang ubar-abir gurunmune, kita anembah
sanghyang ubar-abir, Om sa ba ta a I na ma si wa ya".
The ingredients of the medicine for curing a disease related to
the land being haunted, or when there is black magic or talisman
in the land include 9 sets of rice with pork, salt, arranged to
occupy the nine directions in front of the house during sunset,
by pouring water three times on it, and by sprinkling water three
times with the accompanying charm: "Om durga sirep, bhutakala
dengen sirep, desti taranjana sirep, aku dewataning bayu, aku
amancut guna, amancut gering, durga sirep, wisya mandi, amancut
papasangan pamendeman, kapupug dening hyang wiryawan, teka pupug
punah, punah, punah, waras, waras, waras. Om brahma sirep"
(My Goddess of Durga, it is hoped that Bhuta Kala Dengen and all
kinds of black magic surrender to Deity of Bayu and that the disease
can be cured). The charm is to be uttered every kliwon

this means that the patient is attacked by the disease of tiwang
dengen. The disease of tiwang is released by Lord
Guru. The ingredients of the medicine are cotton to be mixed
and used as powder. If the body of the patient feels like being
pricked, with feeling of sickness and the feeling that there is
something pressing on his/her midriff, the patient is attacked
by tiwang temen. The ingredients of the medicine are young
jackfruit, red rice, galangale , to be mixed and used for sprinkling
the midriff of the patient. If the eyebrows of the patient are
nervously twitching, she/he is suffering from the disease of tiwang
bojog. The ingredients of the medicine include the bark of
tinggulun tree which is to be applied as powder on the
legs of the patient and the mixture of the falling leaves of Erythrina
variegata, galangale and coriander seeds are used for sprinkling
the area from stomach up to the midriff. If the body of the patient
is curved and cannot turn over,
[18b] She/he
is attacked by the disease of tiwang bangke. The ingredients
of the medicine are jarak bang, the root of bangke
spinach, onion, fennel, all mixed and to be used as powder. If
the legs of the patient are powerless, and she/he cannot speak,
she/he is suffering from the disease of tiwang bantang.
The ingredients of the medicine are the powder of limestone, turmeric
warangan, to be mixed and used for powdering the legs,
The ingredients of the drinking medicine are the water produced
by soaking sandalwood, and the lime juice. If the midriff of the
patient is painful, twisting in the navel, causing restlessness,
she/he is suffering from the disease of tiwang lumba-lumba.
The ingredients of the medicine are the root of cactus, red rice,
to be crushed and then put on the navel of the patient. If the
patient is suffering from twisting pain in the navel, he is suffering
from the disease of tiwang wedus. The ingredients of the
medicine are kamferia galanga, onion, ginger, chilli, and candlenut,
to be crushed and put on the navel of the patient. If there is
a twisting pain in the stomach of the patient, she/he is suffering
from tiwang rare. The ingredients of the medicine are black
Coleus atropurpureus, selasih merik, uku-uku, onion, and
fennel to be mixed and used for sprinkling the stomach of the
patient. If the stomach of the patient is felt to be pushed upward
[19a] and
to be hard, she/he is suffering from the disease of tiwang
lesung. The ingredients of the medicine are the filling of
mortar, gempong canging, galangale, and rice, to be mixed
and used as powder. If the midriff of the patient is cramp, the
elbows are elbowing away, she/he is suffering from the disease
of tiwang tundik. The ingredients of the medicine are tamarind,
yellow rice (rice mixed with turmeric), gundil pepper mixed
and used for sprinkling the midriff of the patient. The ingredients
of the rubbing medicine are kwang wood and padang lepas.
If the midriff of the patients is felt like being pricked, she/he
is suffering from the disease of tiwang mong, and if it
is accompanied by the sticking feeling inside, she/he is suffering
from the disease of tiwang rangsek. The ingredients of
the medicine are kamadangan, bitter ginger, to be mixed
and used to sprinkle the aching parts of the body. The ingredients
of medicine for the disease of tiwang uyang are gamongan
which is used for sprinkling the navel of the patient. If the
patient is attacked by the disease of tiwang kekeh, the
ingredients of the medicine are the parasite of the pomegranate
tree and onion, to be mixed and used for sprinkling the patient.
If the patient is suffering from stifling heat, the eyes are blankly
staring, she/he is suffering from the disease of tiwang bangke.
The ingredients of the medicine are
[19b] onion,
garlic, jangu, to be mixed and used as powder. If the hands of
the patient are stiff, the patient is attacked by the disease
of tiwang gurita and the ingredients of the medicine are
the leaves of yellow meduri used as powder. If the body
of the patient feels heavy, she/he is suffering from tiwang
kebo, the ingredients of the medicine are the root of rangrang,
onion, garlic, jangu, and the root of cactus, to be mixed
and used as powder. If the body of the patient is twisting, she/he
is suffering from the disease of tiwang be julit, for which
the ingredients of the medicine are padang alya, onion,
garlic, jangu, and betel leaves, to be mixed and used for
powdering the legs of the patient. If the arms of the patient
are strongly moving, he is attacked by the disease of tiwang
gurita, and the ingredients of its medicine are the leaves
of Erythrina variegata growing in the forest, onion, garlic, and
jangu, to be mixed mixed and used as powder. If the mouth
of the patient is sometimes widely opened and sometimes tightly
shut, she/he is suffering from the disease of tiwang mang,
of which the ingredients of the medicine are the root of tuba
jenu, nutmeg, sarilungid, sinrong, to be mixed mixed
and used as powder. If the body of the patient looks blackish,
she/he is attacked by the disease of tiwang goak, the ingredients

bojog and the ingredients of the medicine are the leaves of
lime, pepper, kamferia galanga, onion, garlic, and jangu,
all mixed and used as powder. The ingredients of medicine for
the disease of tiwang bojog are liligundi, galangale,
and vinegar, all mixed to be drunk. The ingredients of the medicine
to be sprinkled on the stomach of the patient are the outer part
of the bark of Alstonia scholaris tree, coriander seeds. If the
patient is in pain and restless, he is suffering from tiwang
utara, the ingredients of the medicine are the kernel of seksek,
the kernel of gamongan, onion, garlic, and jangu,
all mixed to be used as powder. If the inside part of the patient
is painful, the stomach is felt to be twitching, he is having
the disease of tiwang ngalud, the ingredients of the medicine
are gamongan, tahep leaves, onion, garlic, jangu,
red rice, and lime juice, all mixed to be drunk. If the patient
is in pain like being pricked up to the back everytime he breaths,
[20b] She/he
is suffering from the disease of tiwang pamali, the ingredients
of the medicine are panggihan tis, the outer part of the
bark of Alstonia scholaris tree, roasted coconut, candlenut, and
fennel, all mixed to be used for sprinkling the aching parts of
the patient. If the patient is in pain at night like being pricked,
she/he is suffering from the disease of tiwang mong, the
ingredients of the medicine are the root of kanji eggplant,
the outer part of the bark of bila tree, sungsungan
danyuh, onion, garlic, and jangu, to be mixed, roasted,
crushed and mixed with red saliva (the saliva after chewing betel),
and used for rubbing the body of the patient. If the patient is
in pain as if being pinched, she/he is suffering from the disease
of tiwang asu, the ingredients of the medicine are kitchen
ashes, turmeric warangan, tabia bun (piper retrofractum vahl.),
onion, garlic, jangu, and candlenut, to be mixed and crushed
and then used for rubbing the body of the patient. If the eyebrows
of the patient are nervously twitching, she/he is attacked by
the disease of tiwang bojog, the ingredients of the medicine
are tuwuk wood, pepper, kamferia galanga, onion, garlic,
jangu, red rice, and lime, to be mixed and used as powder.
If the patient feels as if she/he were chopped, she/he is suffering
from the disease of tiwang babi, the ingredients of the
medicine are 9 slices of turmeric warangan, 9 pieces of
betel leaves
[21a] onion,
garlic, jangu, water produced by soaking sandalwood, red
rice, and powdered limestone, to be mixed and used as powder.
If the stomach of the patient is cramp up to the midriff, the
patient is suffering from sula walikat, the ingredients
of the medicine are the bark of Moringa citrifolia munggi, onion,
garlic, and jangu, to be mixed and for sprinkling the midriff
of the patient. If the patient is suffering from stomachache and
gastroentritis, she/he is attacked by the disease of tiwang
buntek, the ingredients of the medicine are old betel leaves,
galangale, sugar, and coconut water, to be mixed to be drunk.
If the patient is suffering from twisting pain in the stomach,
as if being pricked, she/he is suffering from tiwang nanipi,
the ingredients of the medicine are the outer part of the bark
of awar-awar tree, onion, garlic, and jangu, all
mixed to be used for sprinkling the aching part of the patient's
body. If the stomach of the patient is painful and the pain comes
and goes, she/he is suffering from tiwang angin, the ingredients
of the medicine are three shoots of liligundi (vitex trifolia
Linn) leaves, 3 slices of galangale, 3 slices of gamongan
(zingiber sp.), onion, garlic, jangu, all mixed to
drink. The ingredients of sprinkling medicine are the leaves of
pomegranates, Boesenbergia pandurata, garlic, jangu,
[21b] if
the patient's body is stiff, the chin is stiff, she/he is suffering
from the disease of tiwang bantang, the ingredients of
the medicine are the eye of ginger, and lime juice, all mixed,
to be used as powder, if the patient is fast asleep, she/he is
suffering from the disease of tiwang bangke, the ingredients
of the medicine are the bark of Alstonia scholaris tree, sintok,
onion, garlic, jangu, Cryptocarya laevigata, nutmeg, clove,
sampar wantu, coriander seeds, the leaves of shaddock,
and red rice, all mixed to be used as powder. If the patient feels
that the pain is spreading to the stomach, she/he is suffering
from the disease of tiwang gurita, the ingredients of the
medicine are the leaves of yellow meduri, garlic, candlenut,
onion, garlic, and jangu, all mixed to be used for sprinkling
the aching parts of the patient's body. If the patient feels stiflingly
hot, he/she suffers from gastroentritis and if slightly stiff,
she/he is suffering from the disease of tiwang babahi.
The ingredients of the medicine are udani, Blumea balsamifera
and Alstonia scholaris, all to be boiled and the boiling water
is taken to be drunk. If the patient feels dizzy, she/he is suffering
from tiwang guwak, the ingredients of the medicine are
turmeric,galangale, sugar, and water produced by soaking sandalwood,
to be mixed to be drunk. If the patient is in pain in his/her
stomach and
[22a] coughing,
she/he is suffering from tiwang bebek, the ingredients
of the medicine are the leaves of raja tangi, white teleng
leaves, lime juice, all mixed to be drunk. If the body of the
patient is stiff, she/he is suffering from tiwang lojor,
the ingredients of the medicine are kamandi leaves, onion,
and fennel, all mixed to be used for sprinkling the aching parts
of the patient's body. If the patient's body is in fever and her/his
eyes are staring blankly, she/he is suffering from tiwang bangke,
the ingredients of the medicine are old betel leaves, onion, and
garlic, all mixed to be used as powder. If the limbs of the patient
are stiff, as if holding something in her/his grasp, she/he is
suffering from tiwang gurita, the ingredients of the medicine
are yellow madori leaves, the outer part of the bark of
Erythrina variegata growing in the forest , onion, garlic, and
jangu, all mixed to be used as powder. If the mouth of
the patient is opened, she/he is suffering from tiwang mang,
the ingredients of the medicine are the leaves and the roots of
tuba batang, the outer part of the bark and the root of
apit wood, onion, garlic, and jangu, all mixed to
be used as powder. If the patient is vomitting, he is attacked
by the disease of tiwang belabur, the ingredients of the
medicine are 7 pieces of old, curving betel leaves, onion, garlic,
and jangu,
[22b] The
ingredients are mixed together to be drunk while reciting the
charms: “Om kita tiwang blabur, tumpe baher, kedep-kedep
sidi-sidi mantranku” (My Tiwang Blabur (the name of the
disease), it is hoped that you can be cured and that my magic
formula be powerful). To cure dizziness and bad headache needs
such ingredients as betel lime powder and lemon juice. These stuffs
are mixed together as nostril drops for the patients. When the
patients’ midriffs are beating hard, they are diagnosed
as suffering from the diseases called tiwang gagedul. The
medical ingredients including liligundi (vitex trifolia Linn.)
leaves, kelor (moringa oleifera), red onion, white onion
and jangu are mixed together to be drunk and the
patients’ navels should be plugged with such ingredients
as eggplant roots (terung), red onion, white onion, jangu,
paya puwuh (trichosanthes anguine) seeds and some vinegar.
The powder for the patients’ legs is made from tabia
bun, a kind of creeping chilli, dakep, red onion, white
onion, jangu and some vinegar. Some diseases such as queasiness
followed by stiff stomach and short- winded breath are called
upas uyak. This can be cured by the outer part of the bark
of karoya and boiling water for herbal drinks. If the patients
still feel queasy and is followed by stiff stomach they are then
diagnosed as upasilali. They should take something to drink
made from padang lepas and adas (foeniculum vulgare
mill)
[23a] The
diarrhoea can be treated with three slices of galingale and
followed by the following magic formula: “Om sapata umah
sanghyang rosa, anambanana muntah mising, teka waras, waras, waras”
(My Deity of Rosa, it is hoped that the diarrhoea can be cured).
The sudden diseases can be cured by some cooked rice and some
betel lime powder. These ingredients are squeezed and mixed with
coconut wine and some salt and then the patients should drink
this liquid mixture. The beating midriffs can be treated with
liligundi leaves, galingale, red onion, white onion
jangu and lemon juice which are mixed together
to be drunk. The disease in the midriffs can be cured by some
ingredients such as gamongan, the white part of a new chicken
egg white, These stuffs are burnt and the pieces of porcelain
are put into the mixture and then this mixture is ready to drink.
Here is some guidance on how to detect a disease. You need only
a certain young banana plant called pisang gedang saba
with some charms, and it is placed at the top head area of the
patients’ bedroom for three nights. When you detect
the source of the disease within three nights stop placing the
banana plant there. However, when you have not detected the signal
of the disease yet during this period of time
[23b] you
should extend it for another three nights and let the patients
sleep alone. You can use the offerings to drive away the evil
spirits, of which the offerings include complete sagi and
250 Chinese coins and canang. These ritual stuffs are placed
beside the patients in their sleeping. The patients can
do meditation while sleeping because the evil spirits may disturb
them. You can recite the following charms. ”Pukulun sang
ratu matangi, sapanglaranin si, anu, yan saking dewa, yan saking
bhuta, yan saking dengen, yan saking manusia, warahen den tatas,
poma, poma, poma” (My Master, wake up, please ! It
is hoped that you will tell us clearly, whether the disease comes
from any deity, giant, or bhuta kala (a bad spirit). This
treatment can be done by using a piece of onion for blowing
the disease three times while reciting the following mantras
or charms: “ah sang mangkana, aku wruh ring aran sira,
maharan ki bhuta kekawah, ki bhuta ari-ari, ki bhuta rudira, aja
sira ngraranin si anu, metu kita ring weteng, mandadi tahi, mandadi
enceh, teka sahak, sahak, sahak” (You are named Buta
Kekawah (a bad spirit) and the like. You are not to hurt the patient.
You are to come out from the anus and sex). This preventive
medication can be done by the use of some kind of ginger,
candlenut, jentung and some salt. These ingredients
are mixed together for blowing out the patients by saying following
charms “Om wisesa mambuwungang bedasa, tumbran barah,
teka urung , urung, urung” (My Superpower, it is hoped that
you cancell all)
[24a] mambuwungang
bedasa, tumbran barah, teka urung, urung, urung” (The Most
powerful, it is hoped that everything be cancelled). Here
is the so called panawed prescription. The ingredients
include three pieces of amadangan leaf-buds and a handful
of rice. Those buds are tied with thread in three colours (red,
black and white) which are to be used for hitting the patients’
head three times. Afterwards this means of medicating is slipped
in between two tiles of the kitchen’s roof. Remember to
recite the charms: “Om getih mandadi banyeh, banyeh mandadi
nanah, nanah mandadi taluh puyung, puyung, puyung”
(It is hoped that the blood become dirty water and suppuration
and that the suppuration become an empty egg and the emptiness
come). How to treat tujuh rasa, a seven-sensory
disease?. The ingredients comprise three pieces of waru
leaf-buds, gelagah roots, onion and adas. These
stuffs are mixed together to produce herbal drinks. You should
know several names of bebahi diseases so that you can treat
them accurately
[24b] Here
is the story. “jham jham nryah, byahng, Ong Ung, Sanghyang
Tiga Sakti comes down the world from Heaven, He goes with
Babu Raraeweng. Then Babu Rareweng goes wandering around
the villages and she lives at Tanah Sebrang. After a few months,
she bears a child called Si Ratna Bahi. Not long afterwards Babu
Rareweng goes wandering again all over the villages and
she lives at Blangbangan. There she bears a child called Sri Puntyanak.
Afterwards, again she goes wandering all over the villages and
then resides in Lombok permanently. After a few months staying
there she bears a child called Sri Ratna Mencari. Finally Babu
Rareweng is under the curse of Sanghyang Tiga Sakti that she becomes
a widow. She has a face of fire wood with the head
of coconut shell, with nut fibre hair, with bamboo pipe, semprong
nose, with bamboo fire stick hands, with siyut, wood rice
mixer elbows, with lekeh, round pot base bowels, with spoon
ears and with glass eyes. Her physical descriptions take the models
after most traditional kitchen utensils in Bali. “Eng
Ong Aing” is very invulnerable for smoking out with
the means of the pigdung
[25a] To
cure tujuh rasa, you can use bitter pumpkin, lampuyang,
onion and adas (foeniculum vulgare mill). These stuffs
are mixed together for something to drink and the dregs are applied
as powder. In treating tujuh rasa, you need big roots,
white hibiscus roots, gelagah (sacharrum spontaneum L.)
roots, gebang roots, onion and adas. These ingredients
are mixed together for something to drink. To treat kahangan,
calculi disease you need coconut flower, onion and adas.
These stuffs are also mixed together for something to drink. Tujuh
rasa with pus and blood can be treated with some ingredients
such as undung-undung leaves and roots, sarilungit.
These stuffs are mixed together to be drunk. You can also
cover your stomach area under the navel with some salt, onion
and adas. Tujuh rasa can also be treated with
the outer part of the bark of gatep, some water sediment,
sarilungid. These stuffs are wrapped in a banana
leaf and roasted and then they are mixed together to be drunk.
Or you can also treat it with some turmeric, tamarind, some water
and a drop of coconut oil. These ingredients are pulverised and
soaked in hot kitchen ashes and then adhere it on the patients’anus.
[25b] When
the patients suffer from black magic diseases with high fever,
you can treat them with some ingredients such as tengeh,
white meduri roots, some red rice, red onion, white onion
and jangu. The stuffs are mixed together to produce some
powder for the patients’ legs. You can also use pugpug
stick, tulak stick, rubbish found in a cross-road and
limestone. For the body powder you need yellow dadap (erychrina
variegata L.) leaves, the outer part of the bark of kesambi
majakene, majakeling and sarilungid. Cough with phlegm
can be treated with galingale juice, lemon roots, a long-kept
vinegar. These stuffs are mixed together for something to drink.
Medication for cough with phlegm and snoring is lampuyang,
galingale, pule (alstona scholaris) leaves, coriander seeds
and sandalwood fluid. These stuffs are mixed together for powder.
For herbal drinks you can mix together such stuffs as pule
stick, black miana, a kind of ginger, sandalwood fluid,
lemon juice. These stuffs are steamed and strained to be drunk.
Cough can be treated with warangan turmeric and some sugar.
These stuffs are applied for blowing out the patients’ breasts.
[26a] Whooping
cough can be treated with meduri leaves, warangan
turmeric, galingale, onion and adas. These stuffs
are mixed together as powder applied on the patients’ breasts.
Cough can also be treated with mixture of galingale and tamarind
for herbaldrink. Cough with spiting sputum can be treated with
a kind of ginger, paya puwuh leaves and tamarind.
These stuffs are mixed together and boiled as herbal drinks. The
dregs are used for blowing out the patients’ midriffs. The
patients who suffer from chronic cough should drink a mixture
of tamarind and sandalwood fluid. Cough with phlegm and accompanied
with stiff midriffs can be treated with greater galingale, tamarind
roots and some vinegar. These stuffs are mixed together for herbal
drinks.
[26b] When
the patients cough up blood and pus, you need some turmeric, tamarind,
coconut oil, onion, a chicken egg. These stuffs are heated and
served as herbal drinks. Dry coughs can be treated with such ingredients
as white teleng roots, candlenut and some kitchen salt.
These stuffs are mixed together as drops which is to be used for
blowing out the patients’ breasts. Medication for dry coughs
include the ingredients such as buhu leaves, fallen dedap
leaves and some salt. These stuffs are mixed together for
blowing out the patients’ breast. Remember to recite the
charms “Om keni-keni pujut, basa manggawe bukit, teka
sahak, sahak, sahak” (It is hoped that the defect be cured).
For tumor medication, you need warangan turmeric and
some kitchen salt to be mixed together for blowing out the patients.
Remember to recite the charms: “Om sarwa dahah mapupul,
sing jalannmu tumbuh teka sahak, hana gurunmu, teka sahak, sahak,
sahak, kedep sidi mantranku” (It is hoped that the accumulated
meat and oyur instructor be destroyed and that my magic formula
be powerful). The medicine for a baby who has got stomachache
and is in a weak condition includes such ingredients as roasted
betel stalk, some black ginten which are mixed together
for blowing out his or her midriffs. The roasted kesimbukan
leaves and onions are used for blowing out the patients’
breasts.
[27a] A
mixture of roasted tamarinds and three seeds of pepper are used
for covering their navels. Sembung (blumea balsamifera) leaves
and onions are used as powder and pupuk, i.e. a
mixture of those ingredients that used for covering the crown.
For blowing out the patients’ crowns you need roasted yellow
dadap (erythrina orientalis) leaves and kamferia galanga.
For medication by rubbing the waists and stomach areas lower
than navel you need the scrapings of castor-oil plants and jack
fruit trees, candlenut, the main gamongan (zingiber sp.),
onion and adas (foeniculum vulgare mill), These stuffs
are mixed together and well roasted. Medication for a baby being
attacked by gwamam includes such ingredients as ati-ati
and some kane milk. These stuffs should be well roasted,
and remember to mix them with some kitchen salt. For rubbing
the patients’ breasts you need kayu manis (linnamomum
burmanii) leaves and roasted coconut which are pulverised.
For the body-powder you can use the main gamongan. For
the stomach- powder you need the main pulverised gamongan
and musi, and these stuffs are well steamed and
then they are powdered on all over the stomach. There is also
another powder being made from roasted the outer part of the bark
of dadap and suren. But you do not have to turn
round these stuffs when you roast them. Or if you want to, you
can use some roasted greater galingale and kamferia galanga, coriander
seed, wet rice and sandalwood fluid. These stuffs are mixed together
as the powder.
[27b] The
medication for such diseases as badi, having worms in the
stomache, queasy stomach and skinny body, includes such ingredients
as eight pieces of tibah (morinda citrifolia L.) flower,
eight pieces of white onion and eight slices of jangu. All
of these stuffs are roasted, mixed together and pulverised. They
are then made into seven pellets and dried. They are served as
herbal tablets and taken once every three days. To treat
the skinny body you need raw stone crab, daringo.
Then they are pulverised to produce the stomach-powder.
Medication for curek, i.e infected ears producing bad smell
includes male betel and wijen oil. These stuffs are pulverised
and squeezed for ear-drops. There are some other stuffs including
black miana and tebel-tebel. These stuffs are buried
in hot ashes and then they are squeezed for the patients’ear-drops.
Or you can also use some oil and warirang which are
boiled for ear-drops as well.
[28a] Medication
for puruh banta, i.e. dizziness includes the use of ingredients
such as the outer part of the bark of kem, black ginger
and some vinegar. These stuffs are mixed together and boiled in
a pot inscribed with picture and then this is to be used as powder.
Medication for puruh ulad-alid, i.e. nose producing liquid
includes a kind of . ginger and some kitchen salt which are chewed
and mixed with some oil for nose-drops. Puruh banyu can
be treated with a slice of greater galingale, gamongan
(zingiber sp.), and bangle (zingiber cassummunar Roxb.).
These stuffs are mixed with some clove, pepper, white onion, very
old rice wine, idu bang and sinrong for the patients’
powder. Treating a baby suffering from tiwang belabur needs
such ingredients as yellow betel leaves, yellow star fruit (averhoa
bilimbi L.) leaves, yellow orange leaves, red onion, white
onion and jangu. These stuffs are mixed together for the
powder. You can also use the ingredients such as gedang saba,
i.e. a kind of papaya, the outer part of the bark of dadap,
roasted onion. These stuffs are mixed together for herbal
drinks. Or you can use dadap leaves, some rice, pulasari
and onion, which are mixed together for the powder. Treating
a bad pain all over the body you can use three pieces of eggplant
leaves, three slices of greater galingale, kamferia galanga, some
white onion, jangu, mesui (massoia aromatica Becc)
and coriander seeds.
[28b] Medication
for feverish and painful body as well as paralysis includes some
cloves, mesui (massoia aromatica Becc), some salt with
iodine. These stuffs are squeezed and strained for herbal drinks.
To treat arthritis in various parts of the body, such as, that
in the hands, in the legs, in the lips, in the nose and eye-brows
with nervous twich, being unable to walk, feeling like being pricked
with pins and needles, you need some black cane pulp, glowing
coconut shell, ketepeng’s roots and creeping chilly
(piper retrofractum vahl.) roots. These ingredients are mixed
together to smoke the patients, and the charcoal is used
for the powder. When the patients are vomiting, you can treat
them with pomegranate leaves, old betel leaves, greater galingale,
utah-utah and coriander seeds. These stuffs are
mixed together to blow out the patients. Swollen body and bad
pain are symptom for moro disease or arthritis. This disease
can be treated by using warangan, main turmeric, sandalwood,
mesui (massoia aromatica Becc), red onion, white
onion and jangu. These stuffs are mixed together to produce
the powder.
[29a] Some
other ingredients can also be used such as the outer part of the
bark of ancak (ficus rumphii Bl.), but be sure to
stand naked when you are peeling out this tree. This stuff is
mixed together with seven seeds of adas (foeniculum vulgare
mill), twenty-one coriander seeds, used for the powder. There
are also some other medical ingredients for the same purpose such
as the outer part of the bark of pungut-pungut, pulasari,
adas and nutmeg. Medication for bleeding nose includes
bekul leaves, kangkang, crabs, main greater
galingale and lemon juice. These ingredients are mixed together
for herbal drinks. This bleeding nose is also called mokan
tumisyan in the local language. This can also be treated with
a mixture of young coconut leaves, blulang grass roots,
sandalwood, onion and adas which is to be used for the
nose drops. To treat tiwang kunyit warangan disease you
need some main turmeric, betel lime stone powder, red onion, white
onion and jangu which are mixed together for the powder.
Physical weakness like sleeping man is called tiwang bayu
disease in the indigenous language. To treat this you need some
betel leaves, mesui (massoia aromatica Becc), red onion,
white onion and jangu, which are mixed together for the
powder.
[29b] Those
who keep shaking their heads are suffering from tiwang powak.
This can be treated with roofs made from coconut leaves, the
outer part of the bark of bila (ferenia limonia swingle),
red onion, white onion and jangu. All of these stuffs are
burnt and pulverised for the powder. When the patients feel queasy
in their midriffs and their eyes bug out. This is due to a tiwang
mangan ring jro. You can treat it by using the medical ingredients
such as orange leaf, lime leaf, yellow betel leaf, pule‘s
bark, gamongan, red onion, white onion and jangu. These
stuffs are mixed together for herbal drinks and powder.
[30a] When
the patients’ backbone bends down, they suffer from a disease
called tiwang dopang. You can treat it by using some
powder made from a mixture of samanjahi roots and stems,
onion and adas. To blow out their bodies you can use roasted
bangle, some salt and coriander seeds. You can also
use nasal drops and herbal drinks made from the outer part of
the bark kendal, red onion, white onion, jangu and
roasted onion. Ambien can be treated with powder and herbal
drinks made of a mixture of warangan turmeric, water sulasih,
kesimbukan (paederia feotida) and roasted onion. Ambien
with blood is called tuju more. This disease can
be treated with a mixture of the outer part of the bark
kacemcem, tamarind, warangan turmeric, onion and
coriander seeds. The mixture is well boiled before it is attached
around the anus. When the patients feel a great deal of pains
in their anus then they are suffering from tiwang gode. This
disease can be treated with powder made from dawu root,
sugar palm root, ashes of trenggiling hair, red onion,
white onion and jangu.
[30b] Quesiness,
hiccough and stomacache can be treated with powder made from a
mixture of warangan turmeric, yellow betel leaves, temurose,
red onion, white onion, and jangu. When squeezing these
stuffs you are supposed not to move and add some idu bang
straight away. Fever and stiff hands and legs are called
tiwang beruang. This can be treated with nose drops
made from lemon, black miana and coconut oil. When the
patients feel itching all over their bodies, then they are suffering
from tiwang gatel. You can treat such a disease by using
greater galingale and pepper. Tiwang depa-depa can be treated
with some powder made from a mixture of stone wood, gamongan,
red onion, white onion and jangu. Treatment of tiwang
can be made with cotton seeds and these seeds are wrapped with
awar-awar leaves and then they are buried beside the patients’
doors. Remember to recite the following charms: “sarwa
urung, jambe urung, urung tunggal, urung-urung kabeh, urung pande
wesi, urung pangaji, pangumik, pangalah, panyawang, pangalaha
tan pasabuk tan pasaput” (It is hoped can
be cured without belt and blanket). The burial of the stuffs
is then ended by reciting the following charms: three times
“nini tangar, kaki kemi aku, da maang leyak mai” (My
Grandmother Tangar and Grandfather, it is hoped that you take
care of me and that black magic will not come here).
[31a] Tiwang
babahi and tiwang gombeng can be treated with
some powder made from a mixture of turmeric, red rice, powder
lime, red rice, red onion, white onion, and jangu. When
the patients’ hands keep grasping, this kind of disease
is called tiwang nyalian. You can treat it by using
some powder made from betel leaf, red onion, white onion, jangu
and red rice. When the patients open their hands and they shake
their heads while lifting their face, they are diagnosed as suffering
from tiwang sikep. You can treat this with some powder
made from a mixture of cock liver, red rice, red onion, white
onion, and jangu. When the patients’ bodies look
blackish, this is a symptom of a disease called tiwang lenga.
When the patients have worms in their stomaches you can apply
some powder all over their bodies. The powder is made from a mixture
of the outer part of the bark of frangipani, turmeric and
coriander seeds. The urinal disease can be treated by the use
of some powder made from bungkak nyingnying’s leaves,
kesemsem and adas. To blow out the area from the
patients’s necks to their ears you can use sinrong
[31b] Worms
in the stomach can be treated by using wani leaves, meduri,
main-turmeric and ginger. These ingredients are squeezed and then
are attached on the patients’ crowns. You can also use eye-drops
made from kasegsegan roots and mahmah. When the
worms do not come up from the stomach you can change the
medication by using some powder made from lime powder
and kamferia galanga. For something to drink you can use
a mixture of sweet palm wine, saliva and ampalas sap. When
the babies have chronic worms in their stomaches you can use eye-drops
made from lime and pepper. These ingredients are buried in hot
ashes until they are well done. Then they are squeezed for
dropping the patients’ eyes. When a baby suffers from uleran
tahan, you can treat this disease by applying some powder
made of a mixture of powder lime, iron powder and turmeric.
To pull the worms you can use an egg which is tied with
black thread three times. Then it is buried in hot ashes. Remember
to recite the following charms. “Om ingsun angegeng tendas
cacing, anglara ning weteng,lan uga buntut esun tigas, anglarani
weteng i rare, cacing sun pangan, ayo ko alumah, ko paranane,
lah awaras, suka liweraning lara rogane si anu” (It is hoped
the worms residing in the stomach be destroyed and that the disease
can be cured). Here is a miraculous picture of the egg.
[32a] Medication
for slow-moving milk from the nipple needs the recital of the
following charms. “Ih dekep das cai, dekep i mas landi,
poma, poma, poma” (It is hoped that I Mas Lendi can be caught).
When the babies do not want to breastfeed you need to cover
their mothers’ breast with squeezed dedap
leaf . The leaf is taken from the middle one out of a three-
leaf twig. You can also use another medicine called banyu
tuli. When applying this, remember to recite the following
charms:“metu Hyang Kala, mandera ring gunung kembung”
(It is hoped that Deity of Kala go away to mount Kembang). When
the babies frequently vomit, you can blow out their midriffs by
using pule (alstonia scholaris), three slices of turmeric
and three seeds of pepper. Their shoulders should be blown out
with scrapings of dedap’s tree. When the babies
keep crying every night for no reasons, they are diagnosed as
suffering from tiwang temreretan. The treatment of this
includes some rice costing a piece of Chinese coin and jackfruit
sap. These ingredients are put in nine small containers called
takir, and these nine takir containers are placed beside
the babies’ beds. When the babies are often startled
and scared, they are said to be suffering from tiwang
kupu-kupu. In treating this disease you need a mixture of
hibiscus flower, white onion waste after being squashed and jangu.
Rub the patients’ foreheads with this mixture
[32b]
When you can not stop the babies crying you should treat
them by using three pieces of kesimbukan (paederia feotida)
buds. You can also treat them by reciting the following charms:
“Om jroh ung patsah hala mumuhsah” (Hi the bad
spirit, it is hoped that you go away and do not disturb). When
a baby suddenly sleep away, you can treat it with three
internodes of betel twig while reciting the following charms three
times. “Om ta kita lah kita laki laku” (It
is hoped that you do not disturb my child and that you go away).
The baby is blown out three times. Treatment for the baby
who is bleeding and expels some water can be made by using
eye-drops made of a mixture kuwud jarak, sumangi gunung,
white onion, and some salt. When the baby is sultry you can treat
it by blowing out his or her midriffs with black ginten
and to blow out his or her breast with kesimbukan
and onion. You can also apply some powder on the stomach
area under the navel. The powder is made from kuwud jarak,
kuwud nangka, candlenut and adas. These ingredients
are well boiled. Sula tiwang, serious backache, can be
treated by making some ransom-offerings comprising twenty-two
pieces cony rice, peras, penyeneng, sesayut tulung, helis and
white chicken. These offerings are presented at the entrance gate.
[33a] The
offerings presented in front of the house include red chicken,
ransome-money amounting to 1444 and other complimentary
offerings. Remember to recite the following charms. “Om
sang bhuta antu-antu, bhuta bala balik, aja kita angglaranin lare
ye” (My Bhuta Antu-antu, Bhuta Bala-balik (names of a bad
spirit), it is hoped that you do not disturb). When a baby
keep expelling saliva, you can treat it with an orange dipped
in hot ashes and sandalwood water for gargling. You can also blow
out the area from the patients’ breast to their backbone
by using main-turmeric and adas. When the babies suffer
from babaha, cough expelling saliva, you can treat it by
using a mixture of yellow kembang kuning leaf, falling
dedap leaf, padang lepas, plosor andong, betel leaf,
a piece of temurose, gamongan, roasted ginger,
candlenut, sulasih (ocinum bacilicum) leaf, roasted coconut,
wet rice, and onion. These stuffs are used for blowing out
the area from the patients’ breasts to their midriffs. To
blow out their backbones you can use wet rice and the core part
of the onion.
[33b] To
cover the patients’ anus you can use the fibres of dedap,
canging and starfruit (averhoa bilimbi L.) tree, kacemcem
and buhu. These ingredients are mixed with onion and
adas. For something to drink, you need some scratches
of roasted dedap tree and some bronze water. When the babies
have got whooping coughs you should blow out their breasts with
sapta aki leaves and their midriffs are blown with
sembung (blumea balsamifera) leaves, sapta aki leaves,
red onion, white onion and jangu. For the powder
you need three pieces of betel leaves, onion, sandal wood
water. To rub the patients’ bodies, you need a mixture of
sumangi gunung, betel worm, roasted coconut and a kind
of ginger. This mixture is steamed and then dipped in hot ashes.
When the babies suffer from tiwang belabur you need some
powder made of a mixture of yellow betel leaves, orange leaves,
yellow starfruit leaves, red onion, white onion and jangu.
For herbal drinks you need a mixture of gedang saba
banana roots, dedap roots and onion. This mixture is then
dipped in hot ashes before being served as herbal drinks. For
the powder you can use a mixture of dry dedap leaves,
onion, and pulasari
[34a] When
the babies have cough with sputum you can treat it with herbal
drink made from steamed silagui roots, kecemcem
leafbuds, buluh starfruit flowers, roasted coconut and
tamarind. Medication for the sick and thin babies includes bronze
necklace magically inscribed (rajah) with “nyipruh
nyikruh bihruh” and some offerings which consist of
two pieces of cony rice, white chicken and a jug of palm wine.
Deadening hiccough can be treated with a mixture of
katepeng leaves and sarilungid. The mixture is used
for blowing out the patients’ breasts. For the nose
drops you can also use some snail fluid and some milk. Medication
for slow-moving milk from the nipples includes some angki
lime and morning dew. The mixture of these stuffs are used
for rubbing the patients’ breast. The swollen breasts can
be treated with a mixture of jambo leaves, candlenut leaves
and adas by rubbing them. The swollen breasts expelling
bad fluid every day can be rubbed with a mixture of soil
taken from the stairs and rice porridge fluid.
[34b] Breastfeeding
mothers who have got serious stomachache and their milk
is slowly moving can be treated with a mixture of seven
fallen leaves of banyan tree and seven coriander seeds.
This mixture is used for blowing out the patients’ breasts.
You can also treat it with another medication comprising three
delundung leaves which are dipped in warm aron-aron,
i.e. half-cooked rice water. Those leaves are used for
covering the patients’ breasts. Bad pain all over the bodies
can be treated just by applying some powder on the patients’
bodies. The babies who suffer from mangkak disease
can be treated with a mixture of kitchen ashes and idu bang.
This mixture is used for rubbing the patients’ stomachs.
To blow out the patients you can use some yellow (old) dedap
leaves but the ones without veins. These leaves
are mixed with pulasari, adas and inner part of
onion. When the babies have cold in their stomachs, you can blow
them with a mixture of roasted starfruit leaves, onion and adas.
To cover their navels you can use a mixture of kelor
(moringa oleifera) leaves, awon flower and white
onion. After you bathe the babies you should give them a
medical mixture made from yellow jackfruit leaves and some salt.
[35a] When
the babies always have blocked noses, this symptom is called inja
lilit. You can treat it with herbal drinks made from a mixture
of silagui, three shoots of jelit-jelit, candlenut
and roasted onion. When the babies have fever, you can treat it
by rubbing from their bottoms to the lower part of their navels
and backbones with a mixture of wet rice, onion and adas.
When they have diarrhoea you can treat it with herbal drinks made
of a mixrure of gamongan, mother-turmeric and a little
musi. When the babies do not feel like eating you can treat
it with herbal drinks made of a mixture of black miana, pancarsona
leaves, dederekan leaves, scrapings of pule shoots,
warangan turmerics, tanjung rahab, sarilungit and
roasted onion. There is another medication using a mixture of
some pounded rice, gegambiran anom, roasted onion and adas.
This mixture is for herbal drinks. If you feel weak and
sultry you can drink a mixture of big tree roots, dedap
fibres, tamarind, kane milk, temukus and
sarikuning. The mixture is made in the afternoon and served
as herbal drinks the next morning. When the babies suffer from
a disease called tiwang they should drink some water and
not forget to recite the charms:“ih ya kaki tua, nora
kaki tua metu, sira kaki anake teka, syah” (Hi the old grandfather,
it is hoped that you go away).
[35b] The
medication for a baby who is suffering from tiwang includes
a mixture of three suren leaves, red onion, white onion,
jangu and vinegar. The mixture is used for dropping
the patient’s mouth and its dregs are used for covering
the patient’s crown. When a baby is suffering from tiwang
brahma you can treat it with the outer part of the bark of
white kencemcem, roasted onion, some sugar and salt. All
of these ingredients are pondered and then well boiled.
This medicine is used for rubbing the painful part of the patient’s
body. Medication for tunggah includes the medical ingredients
such as lemon leaves and three seeds of pepper. The mixture of
these stuffs are used for blowing out the patient’s midriffs.
When a baby is suffering from tiwang with cold stomach,
you can treat it with kesimbukan leaves squeezed with some
salt and bangle. Then you need to fry the stuffs without
oil and it is used for blowing out the patient’s breast.
You can also use the outer part of the bark of young jackfruit
squeezed with some salt for the same purpose.
[36a] When
a baby has skin diseases such as itching and an ulceration, he
or she is diagnosed as barah gatel riong jro. You can treat
it with yellow betel leaves, temurose, red onion, white
onion, jangu, candlenut, galingale, vinegar and sandalwood.
These ingredients are roasted and then are used for rubbing the
patients. For herbal drinks you can use a mixture of sembung
rambat, palmwine sugar and sandalwood fluid. When the babies
cry at night you can treat them by writing the patients’
name on the lontar leaves and then blow them
out with a mixture of red onion, white onion and jangu.
You can also blow out the patients with a mixture of daringo
and white onion. In addition, the lontar leaves on which
the patients’ names are written are put under the patients’beds
facing North-East by reciting the charms:“Om Brahma sudha
swaha” (My holy and noble Lord Brahma). You can
as well use some ashes located in front of fireplace of the kitchen.
The ashes are rubbed three times using the left hand, and then
are marked with a plus sign. Afterwards they are picked up three
times and are rubbed on the patients’ foreheads straight
away by reciting the charms: “Om paksya raja ya
nama swaha” (My Noble King Paksi).
[36b] Medication
for the epidemics such as diarrhea, pejen, lalengedan
without any reasons and with dreadful pain in the stomach includes
a mixture made of the outer part of the bark of dedap pondered
with stone while making sure not to walk on it, three slices of
gamongan three slices of tiny young coconut,
nutmeg and rice wine. The mixture is used for herbal drinks.
There is another medication using a mixture made of redbrick powder,
white onion, jangu and some vinegar for herbal
drinks. The dregs are used for some powder. Medication for
tropical thrushes, sebaha jampi and cold stomach
includes herbal drinks made from the outer part of the bark of
pule, kemeniran leaves, sumanggi gunung,
sticky rice, or ketan gajih flour. These ingredients
are squeezed and filtered before being served as herbal drinks.
Medication to stop diarrhea includes turmeric and gamongan
which are pulverised and added with some musi. Then
these ingredients are dipped in hot ashes until they are well
done. Squeeze and filter them before being served as herbal drinks.
To treat skin diseases like an ulceration you can use a
mixture of sagu, old coconut fibres, sepet-sepet,
incense, nutmeg and big areca nut. The ulceration is covered with
green betel’s leaves which have already been smoked out
and squeezed. After covering the ulceration it is blown with the
mixture of the former ingredients.
[37a] Medication
for all kinds of injuries includes squeezed kesimbukan
leaves, and vinegar which are used for dropping the injuries.
Then they are blown out with a mixture of gunggung leaves,
turmerics and bangle. Another medication includes the ingredients
such as lempeni leaves and some salt which are ground into
powder. Swelling joints in the bodies can be treated with
a mixture of orange leaves, green beans and inner part of onion.
The mixture is used for blowing out the injuries. Medication for
maluwang includes some powder made of a mixture of kameniran
leaves, bangle, jambot gamongan, white onion, white
onion, jangu and vinegar. When the patients spit up blood
you can treat it with the outer part of the bark of buhu,
limestone and galingale. These stuffs are grated and fried without
oil until they are medium done then add some salt. After they
are well done, pour some sandalwood fluid in the mixture and then
strain it before being served as herbal drink. Coughs can be treated
with a mixture of the outer part of the bark of bangli,
coriander seeds and roasted coconut. This mixture is used for
blowing out the patients’ ribs. Or you can also treat
it with saksak leaves, coconut and onion. They are all
roasted with which you can blow out the patients’ breasts.
Another medication includes such ingredients as some scrapings
of newly grown orange trees, some coriander seeds and gamongan.
The mixture of these stuffs are used for blowing out the patients’
bottom necks.
[37b] Here
is the way how to treat patients who suffer from chronic illness.
You can make some offerings including bubur suci i.e. sacred
rice porridge, tadah pawitra, buratwangi, lengawangi,
betel, areca nut, jambe sepet, green young cocunut which
is perforated in triangle and added with some sandalwood fluid.
Then the offerings are presented on the patients’
bedrooms. The next morning the patients should drink the
young coconut water three times and the offerings are presented
at the house yard. In presenting the offerings do not forget to
recite the following charms. “Dewa aweh ring hyang, hyang
aweh ring taksu, taksu aweh ring manusya sakti, Om dewa pratista
ya namah, Om taksu ya namah, Om manusya pratista ya namah”
(God rewards everything to Taksu (a symbol of a natural strength
by which someone can attacks his/her customers/fans) and then
the taksu rewards everything to human being. It is hoped that
will make everything holy). Continue presenting the offerings
for seven days
[38a] When
the babies are sick they usually struggle to defecate. You should
tie up their loose placenta chords if they still have placenta.
When they struggle to defecate, their heads are hot and have got
fever, they cry every time they move, their necks look weak. They
are diagnosed as having belahan. When the babies keep crying
restlessly, they seem to grip something and they sweat. These
symptoms indicate that they have problems with their midriffs.
If the babies cry loudly and they sweat, they are diagnosed as
having pemalinan. If they are feverish, their
faeces are dry and they always feel restless, their bodies look
reddish, yellow, white, black and have cold stomach, they
feel weak suddenly, they will certainly suffer from
a disease called sarab ring jro. When this disease turn
up, the babies’ bodies will look as red as blood
they are said to have barah ring jro. When this barah
appears the babies will have red spots containing blood all over
their bodies. When the babies cry every time they have fever and
they cry very loudly, they certainly have cold stomach.
[38b] When
the babies have fever and their bodies are weak, both their palms
and their soles are cold, and then they keep sighing. These symptoms
indicate that they have headache. If they have fever all over
their bodies including their palms and soles, their ears are cold,
they will be said to have queasiness in their midriffs and
dizziness in their heads. When the babies keep crying restlessly
and feel painful on their ribs you should treat it with the outer
part of the bark of kelor (moringa oleifera joss), galingale,
red onion, white onion and jangu. These ingredients are
pondered into powder. Do not add some water. Then they are mixed
with awon flower, oil lampwick and idu bang. The
mixture is used for covering the babies’ navels.
[39a] Here
is the medication for the diseases caused by haunted land, blackmagic
practice or papendeman i.e. buried talisman. You can counter
it by making some offerings including nine tandings, i.e.
packets of rice, onion and some kitchen salt. The offerings are
presented at nine points of the compass in front of the house
at dusk. Then they are watered three times and sprinkle them with
holy water three times while reciting the charms as follows.“Om
durga sirep, bhutakala dengen sirepdesti taranjana sirep, aku
dewataning bayu, aku amancut guna, amancut gering, Om durga sirep,
wisya mandi, amancut papasangan, papendeman, kapupug dening hyang
mawirya wana, teka pupug punah, pupug punah, waras, waras, waras,
Om brahma sirep” (My Lord Brahma, it is hoped that Goddess
of Durga, Bhuta Kala and Desti (bad spirit) sleep. I’m Deity
of Bayu (power) and destroy all kinds of black magics). This
should be done every Keliwon day coming once every fivedays
by reciting the charms in earnest. Please be well organised in
saying the charms if you still want to maintain their powerfulness
and medical values. That is all about Usadha revealing
the symptoms of the sick babies. It was completely written on
Wednesday, Umanis, wuku Prangbakat, seven days after
the fullmoon, on the seventh month by a lunar callender, in year
