The Healing of Mental Illness

[1b] This is the knowledge about all kinds of mental diseases and the remedies which include fresh pure water, frangipani flower, 11seeds of galih rice (unbroken rice), which are squeezed and they are put into the sibuh (coconut shell container). After being purified with magic charm, this remedy is then splashed, and drunk three times. The rest is wiped on the patient. The medicine for mental illness with the features of playing faeces consists of such ingredients as a stem of sulasih (a kind of trees), black caraway seed and buyung-buyung (a kind of bush whose flowers look like flies) completed with its leaves. The magic charm is : Ong arah-arah, wayamanisa, wagrana, wisuaha (My God, we hope that all forms of emmotions will be gone). The person who suffers from mental diseases with the characteristics of swollen stomach should be healed using ingredients such as for remedy as liligundi (vitale trivolia), kantawali (a kind of spreading plant with bitter taste), mungsi, nutmeg, and vinegar. All of these are boiled and should to be drunk. The magic charm is : Ong arah-arah ya atutur-tutur namah swaha (My God, we hope that the patient’s mind will be normal again). The remedy for the person who suffers from mental diseases with fever consists of ingredients such as : male and female selegui, tampak liman, also callled tutup bumi (elephantopus LINN), gelagah (saceharum spontaneum), thatch -grass, kasembukan (Eclipta alba Hassk)/urang-aring completed with its young root, the bark of kendal root (a kind of hibiscus plant with pointed leaves, and small sticky fruit), pulasari (Alixia stellata RN), black caraway, fennel onion, sepet-sepet (a kind of plant with hard stem, long, small, pointed leaves, a kind of spices), the mucous membrane of kendal plant, dapdap tis leaf (Ery thrina Varegita), kendal, beligo arum (lagenaria leucantha Rusby), a lump of tombong (soft-mortir like inside part of the coconut), and pounded red rice all packed in leaf and then steamed until it is well cooked, then it is poured with the juice of baked black sugar-reed. There are other ingredients as the yellow leaves of canangium odoratum, sari lungid, bee incense, scrappings of sandalwood. The remedy for mental illness with the features of frivolous behaviour includes ingredients such as all kinds of mushroom which grow on stone, the root of banyan tree (Ficus Benyamina LINN), tri ketuka, 3 slices of bangle, mungsi, and vinegar, of which the juice is boiled and the essence is to be dropped into the ears, the nose, and the eyes. Its waste is rub on the whole body. The magic charm is : Ong lara muksah tutur remut, 3, anduh kita manongosin, jadma manusa maluaran kita, tan pamangan. Malih kita maring panangkan kita rauh sang bayu teka lara lunga waras. The remedy for mental illness with the features of being scared includes ingredients such as the root of red kekara (Dilicos Lab LINN) (Kekara is a kind of pea with flat fruit), white kekara which is already long-grown, and

The remedy for all kinds of mental illness. The ingredients are : Zingiber and orange juice, teri ketuka, and charcoal salt. All of these have to be drunk. The magic charm is : Ong sang baga purus wisesa, sira ngelaranin baga purusa si anu, sira apurusit, maring si anu, aku weruh ring kamulanmu nguni, matanta tangen sanghyang Ratih, kadi pedangane sanghyang Raditia, sanghyang Ratih samangkana pe- (My Deity of sexes, who creates problems in the patien’s sex. The remedy for mental illness, uses the ingredients such as : the flesh of rerek fruit (a kind of fruit which has foam and is used for cleaning silver and black stone), single onion, and vinegar, to be applied as the nose and the eye drops. Its waste is used for facial powder. The magic charm is : Ung arah-arah, ngelimus ring atimu waras.

The remedy for all mental illness uses ingredients such as eleven pieces of black caraway leaves inscribed with sudamala hair, mixed with
[8b] eleven seeds of mungsi, inggu (a kind of substance used for remedy), the core of onion, fennel, and vinegar. Their juice should be drunk and dropped into the nose and the eyes. Its waste is rubbed on the whole body. The magic charm is : Ong sang rambut sudamala, dakonkon aya langgana, lah sira anambanin wong katepuk tegeh, kaparag maring buta kabeh, wastu si anu purna punah, lengleng bungeng edane si anu salah ton, lah waras, 3, iko maranane, lah waras, 3, kedep mandi mantranku (My God, in the form of sang rambut sudamala (name of deity of hair), we hope that you help me treat the patient who suffers from mental illness. We hope that the patient will be quickly healed). The remedy for all kinds of mental illness use ingredients such as: eatable mushroom with the tunggang meneng inscription, bangle leaf with the following inscription

[9a] (This is the figure of sudamala hair (rambut sudamala)) . . . its waste is used for powder. The mantra charm is : Ong ra nini paduka batari Durga, ingsun anyaluk tatamban lara, edane si anu, sama ta kang lara iku murnanu pukulun, a, sira walang ati apan ingsun mawarah sidi saujar ingsun wastu si anu teka waras, 3 (My God, in your manifestation as Bhatari Durga (name of deity), we ask for your favor in treating the patient’s mental illness. We hope that we can heal him/her). There is also a mental illness called bebainan in which the patient keeps insulting the shaman (dukun). The ingredients for this mental illness remedy are : 3 pieces of pungut leaves (pungut is a kind of wild plant, growing in tropical area, on both sides of a road and nowadays is often used for pleasure as bonsai (bonsai is an artificially dwarted pottted plant or small tree), three pieces of dakep pepper leaves (which grows spreading on the ground), three seeds of bold pepper. All of these have to be sprayed on the patient before he is given some massage. and then mixed with majakane (Quercus Lusi Tanica LANK) and maja keling (Terminalia Arboerea K. & V.), white sticky rice (Oryza sativa LINN), sari kuning, the flesh of fragrant pumpkin and these all must be kneaded with the water of sandalwood produced by rubbing. The thick juice is taken and its liquid essence is dropped into the nose. The meaning of the remedy is that
[10a] when used for mental illness it could be dropped into the ears, the eyes, and the nose, and the rest should be drunk. If the illness is other than mental illness, it is used as powder and has to be drunk. The components of the offering are : tumpeng adanan (cone of boiled rice), baked black saung fish, one kind of banana, similar like the offering of bea kaon, young green coconut which contains only water, padang lepas grass (a kind of grass which looks like ribbon), ambengan gelagah (pondreed thatch-grass/saccharum spontaneum of imperata cylindrica) thatch-grass with its stem, bundled with benang tri datu (three-coloured thread, namely red, black, and white), and the magic charm is : Ang kala-kali, luar ta engko kabeh, desti prekasa aksa yaksi, barong brare banaspati, mundur rakita ring sabanta paran kita, aja kita ring kene, ring raga walunane I yunu, apan aku sanghyang tunggal wenang aku sinembah(My Hyang Kala Kali (name of deity), we hope that you leave the patient. You are to worship me, Hyang Tunggal (another name for God).
