Walking Thunder in the Classroom

Walking Thunder in the classroom

As part of Ringing Rocks Foundation's Education and Outreach Program Walking Thunder, a Diné Medicine Woman featured in Profiles of Healing, volume 6, demonstrates the sacred art of Navajo sandpainting to elementary through high school students in and around the Sedona, Arizona area. In a very dynamic way, Walking Thunder will create a beautiful and intricate sandpainting before the students' eyes, all the while explaining the significance of the sandpainting within the Diné culture. The students learn not only about sandpainting but also begin to appreciate the diversity of cultures and traditions of the Southwest. The demonstration will include a study guide sent out in advance, an explanation of the meaning behind the colors and symbols used in a traditional "story-telling" sandpaintings, as well as a hands-on sandpainting session for the children and young adults.

If your school is interested in hosting a program, please send an email to Arcania Blystone.
