Fred Wahpepah in the Classroom
Fred Wahpepah is a Kickapoo and Sac and Fox elder currently residing in Northern California. Fred is a compelling storyteller and engaging presenter who discusses his native traditions - illustrating his presentation with traditional songs, ceremonial objects and legacy articles from life on the "Red Road."
Fred's presentations are "hands on." He brings a large array of ceremonial items used by his tribe and others in various traditional ceremonies—explaining how they are woven into the earth-honoring indigenous lifeways.
For most, this is the first time they will have had a chance to see, touch and even work with sacred objects. The students feel the blessings of an Eagle wing fan, or bless others with Partridge, Red-tailed Hawk or Macaw Tipi-way fans. They feel the sound of a medicine rattle and the purification of a sage blessing.
The children, often at first a bit apprehensive and nervous, soon find themselves fascinated by this special culture and they become particularly enthused when Fred asks them to handle these beautiful items. What emerges is a deeper understanding of and respect for Native American culture and traditions.
In Fred's way, every step, every breath, and every song is a prayer; laughter is a blessing as we learn that we are all related in this fabric of life we call the "Red Road."
